A $3 billion tax bill backed by Democratic-Farmer-Labor lawmakers that cuts the Social Security income tax for many Minnesotans, provides new child tax credits and returns part of the surplus to taxpayers as a one-time check is on its way to becoming law.Members of the Minnesota Senate on Sunday passed a bill containing what DFL lawmakers have described as historic tax relief. In the next two years, the tax bill creates $2 billion in cuts, $1 billion in new taxes and $900 million or so on items like local government aid and property tax refunds. Backers say it will help reduce child poverty, possibly by one-third. In the next four years it would create $4 billion in tax relief and $2.2 billion in new taxes.“The Senate tax bill prioritizes $4 billion in tax cuts for Minnesotans, putting money back in the pockets of families across the state. A dog in Lake Matthews is in a veterinarian hospital after it was caught in a bee swarm earlier this week. While doing some yardwork, a homeowner nearby discovered the hive and attempted to remove it himself, but after a short time, the situation got out of hand.  Part of the swarm headed for the house where Chance, a pit bull and mastiff mix, lives. The dog was stung more than 700 times and had to receive a blood transfusion after being rushed to the vet.  A pit bull and mastiff mix named Chance was stung more than 700 times after getting caught in a swarm of bees. SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has joined soccer clubs and players in coming out to support star striker Vinícius Júnior after he once more faced racist abuse in a Spanish league match on Sunday. The latest incident took place in Real Madrid’s 1-0 loss at Valencia, a match that had to be temporarily stopped after the Brazil forward said he was insulted by a fan behind one of the goals at Mestalla Stadium.Valencia fans were filmed making monkey chants toward Vinícius, who is Black. Lula told a news conference in Japan on the sidelines of a G7 meeting that he hopes FIFA, the Spanish League and other soccer bodies “take measures so we don’t allow racism and fascism to take over” in the sport.“It is not fair that a poor boy who is winning in his life, becoming one of the best in the world, certainly the best at Real Madrid, is insulted in every stadium he goes to,” Lula said. Several of his cabinet ministers also backed Vinicius and were critical of the Spa...

Scheffler’s late charge at PGA not enough to catch Koepka, he’ll have to settle for No. 1

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 16:56:38 GMT

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Scottie Scheffler has gotten so used to the putts he needs to make going in during his rise to stardom, when they don’t, it’s a surprise. And during the final round of the PGA Championship, a little cruel, too. While Scheffler put together a game charge during the final round on Sunday, his 5-under 65 was tainted with what might have been. Scheffler saw a 16-foot birdie putt on the par-4 first hole spin around the hole before staying out. So did an 8-foot par putt on the ninth. Those go in and maybe Scheffler tracks down the front-running Brooks Koepka. They didn’t, evidence that the game can punish even the best in the world sometimes too.Scheffler called the two lip-outs “the worst” he’s ever seen. Yet in typically modest fashion, he declined to blame them on his inability to catch Koepka. He had 72 holes to try to beat Koepka and even though he made fewer bogeys (seven) than everyone else in the 156-man field, he didn’t.“I g...
