The first snow has blanketed the Front Range and dozens of Colorado high school football teams have put away the tackling dummies. It’s state playoff time — for everyone but Class 3A — and the brackets are set. Here’s what to watch for with the big schools in Class 5A and 4A:Class 5AThe FavoriteCherry Creek: Could it really be anyone other than the four-time defending 5A champs? As has been the case throughout its unprecedented run under coach Dave Logan, Creek is loaded in the trenches with a shutdown defense (10.4 points allowed/game), efficient quarterback play (21 TDs/4 INTs) and an endless stream of skill position talent. The top-seeded Bruins (10-0) are not only unbeaten, they’ve faced a second-half deficit just twice all fall. Until someone actually ends the Bruins’ 15-game state playoff win streak, they are the team to beat. The ChallengersColumbine: The only other unbeaten left in 5A, the second-seeded Rebels (10-0) may be the biggest threat to Creek’...

As the Highlands Fire in Riverside County continues to burn an estimated 2,500 acres with only 15% containment, some residents of the small town of Aguanga, east of Temecula, where the fire started are just now starting to cope with the loss of their homes.  While the winds have died down and blue skies have returned to the area, the shroud of smoke and thick ash covering the area just two days ago has given way to ash, melted metal and a debris field that extends for miles.  “It got to a point where I couldn’t see from here to across the street it was so smoky,” resident John Rivera told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson.  Firefighter seen working to extinguish several mobile homes ablaze during the Highlands Fire in Riverside County on Oct. 30, 2023. I had never met him before,” Kerr said. “He said, ‘I want you to take those bleepin’ bleep teammates of yours and bleep bleep and tell them to bleep bleep. I said Yes, sir, Coach Knight.’ And then I went to the players and said, ‘Hey, Coach Knight just encouraged us to play well tonight.’ He was terrifying. Terrifying. SAN FRANCISCO — Back home for barely 72 hours between jaunts to the Central Time Zone, coach Steve Kerr did all he could so the Warriors’ stopover at Chase Center, for yet another meeting with the Sacramento Kings, wouldn’t just feel like a visit to another city in the middle of their daunting two-week stretch. They returned home from a 3-0 road trip through Sacramento, Houston and New Orleans in the wee hours Tuesday morning. They didn’t practice that afternoon or hold shootaround before Wednesday’s contest. And after hosting their playoff foes from a year ago for a 13th time just since the end of last regular season, it’s wheels up to Oklahoma City to visit another four cities before returning home again.Eight games in eight cities in 13 days. It’s a stretch that would test the depth of any team, that might have killed last year’s squad, which didn’t win three consecutive road games all season, let alone a stretch that included back-to...
